10/3/14
This weekend's homework is to continue working on your data analysis. It is suggested that you complete a draft of the thorough analysis of your (at least) 3 chosen survey questions for Monday.
Sample Survey Question: What does “healthy eating” mean to
you?
Sample Responses
· Fruits, vegetables, organic, local, not eating too
much à no overeating
· Nutritious food
· Eating things that are good for one’s body
· Stuff that tastes bad but good for you
· Eating properly as to what I should put in my body and
balancing what I need
· Controlled portions, balanced meals
· Having a balanced diet w/ vegetables and proteins and
the occasional “treat”
· A good balanced diet
· Salad, no fast food restaurants, food that is natural
· Eating things that are good for you, good for your
body
Sample Inferences
Good/nutritious food – 5/10 responses
Balance/not overeating – 5/10 responses
Fruits and vegetables – 3/10 responses
Avoiding certain foods – 2/10 responses
Sample Conclusions
Seniors enrolled in Food Science class
at School of the Future seem to view healthy eating as involving the quality,
amount of food consumed, and types of food consumed. Half of responses analyzed
mentioned that food should be “nutritious” or “good” (and good in this case is
being interpreted as nutritious). Another common aspect of healthy eating among
students was the idea of balance. Again, half of responses stated the words
“balance,” “control” or another term that connotes an effort to not overeat. At
the same time, it was unclear whether “balance” referred to the amount of food
eaten or the variety of foods eaten. Only 30% of respondents mentioned that
healthy eating involves eating a certain types of food such as fruits and
vegetables. Another 20% of students did report that healthy eating involves
avoiding or minimizing certain foods like “fast food” or “treats.” Taken
together, this shows that 50% of subjects viewed healthy eating as involving
choosing to eat certain foods and/or avoiding eating others.
