11/17/14

Tonight's homework is to complete Assignment 20.

Assignment #20 - Vitamin A Comprehension and Discussion Questions

Answer all of the following questions to the best of your ability in complete sentences.

1. Why is it a problem if people (especially young children) do not consume enough vitamin A?

2. Why are some populations unable to obtain vitamin A?

3a. You discussed in genetic engineering/modification in your biology class. What is genetic engineering again?

3b. That’s right, it’s when scientists actually insert genetic material from one species into another (typically into a plant or bacterium). It turns out that genes can be introduced into rice in order to boost its vitamin A production. How excellent! However, this technology is not without controversy. Read “Golden Rice: Lifesaver?” by Amy Harmon and state your opinion on the matter (Should GMOs be used to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies?). Be sure to support your opinion.
